Artist Statement
There is a fragility to this theme, at any moment it can, should, and will come crashing down upon you, as all illusions shatter in time. It is this way with all forms of escape. Such is the case with this narrative, told through ungainly yet beautiful disfigurement of limb and features, which are the distinguishing qualities of the fragile figures of femininity that I paint.
Wide eyed and wasted girls, they are caught in a painful transition resulting from their loss of innocence, and their attempted preservation of their ingenuousness is transferred into the make-believe world through which they wander. Their awkward suffering can be witnessed through their interactions with the barren, rocky landscapes they are placed in, but most importantly through the completion of their bodies, which through confused musings of loss and their own ineptness have been come agitated, twisting into shapes that echo internal darkness.
The paintings are frightening, painful, and yet comical all at once. They are precise of line, the control of pattern and brushstroke mimicking the characters attempt to control their own lives. Each girl evokes her own particular tale, but whichever storyline is suggested, the theme is always of those who are desperately holding onto their sentimental comforts; and the feeling is always that of an uncomfortable loss.
